Seminar Interview

This week on our Seminar class, the activity that we had to do was interview one of our colleages and answer him back as well. This was proposed by professor Margarida Almeida, and the questions were about our investigation and how it connects with social media. My partner was my friend Frederico Cerdeira. The following questions/answers are in portuguese, though, so I'm sorry.

Thanks Frederico! My answers are in his blog, which you can consult here.

Phase/Task Description

Hello again to all of you on that side of the screen.

Even though this blog hasn't been very active the past week or two, it doesn't mean work isn't being developed. In fact, just last week I had two different meetings: a brief one with my coordinator, Prof. Raposo, and a bit larger one with Prof. Luís Pedro, during our class.

Prof. Raposo advised me to start writing, filling in authors, quotes, etc. in their respective places - I've been trying to do that, and it has been quite a struggle - but I'll keep forcing myself to write. Prof. L. Pedro, on the other hand, besides talking to me a bit about the project and its developments/setbacks, advised me to build some sort of a document in which I described the phases of my work that have already gone by and the ones that I know I still have to do.

So I elaborated on that a bit and, after a few hours of writing and organizing it into phases, I proceeded to create a visual graph to demonstrate how they're displayed (and it took me quite a few hours and tries to get it how I wanted), so here it is (and i hope it's understandable). Please full view, or else you won't be able to read it!

You can also view a pdf version here.

Digital Film-Making

Just a brief update, to send a thank-you-very-much-you-are-awesome to @martalino, for lending me her book, Digital Film-Making, one of the books i had in my to-read list.

Did a fast see-through the whole book, to learn more about the themes it debates, and already found an awesome quote, which is its end phrase: "This is the new reality - it's virtual, man, get with it. Cinema is dead - long live cinema!"

Hoping to read it quickly soon, since it's a pretty small book (surprisingly). I'll keep you posted.

Possible uses of this project

Well, as the title says, this post will be a description of potential uses that the I Am Erasmus project may have.

A) Research-wise

In what concerns research, I think this project may be of use in several areas. Since it will focus on the web documentary area, and (in what i've gathered) there are still only a few works specifically about this, if done well it might become a reference (writing it in english/publishing it might help). The fact that it has a focus on a specific community and it will have user contribution makes it comply with the times, because these are pretty recent concepts.

Might it be lucrative? Nah, I don't think so (in what concerns this project specifically). It might be a good start  to raise the number of investigations/works in this kind of field. And the final product may become a good way of introducing Erasmus' candidates to Aveiro/other students' experiences, helping to raise interest in the city and university - which may lead to profit :P (but that's a big IF).

B) Enterprise-level

I can also see this being of use to some enterprises, specifically the audiovisual/multimedia ones. In this sort of field, communication with the end user on several fields has been relevant for quite a few projects.

Since the project will also be about themes like the use of web 2.0 to reach a community, user participation, rules for a web doc, and scripting/developing a flexible narrative, it might be of use to companies looking to expand their field in that direction.

Theoretical Framework Index... and presentation

Hello again,

I've finished my temporary theoretical framework index. And here's a nice little presentation to show it:

 (please view in fullscreen!)

Opinions & Suggestions are appreciated!

PS: In my opinion, Prezi is a very limited tool. If you look past all the nice zooms and camera movements, it doesn't have any flexibility at all for further use.

A few interesting links

Following the work I've been doing - preparing the theoretical framework index, which is due on friday (along with a presentation) - I've found out some links which I'm going to share here, because I think they might be of some interest to whoever's interested in the area.

Firstly, we have How To Write a Documentary Script, which is a monograph written by Trisha Das. It does a great job explaining how to write a script, while also explaining what is a documentary and it's main purposes.

Next is a nice article about Storytelling in web 2.0, giving an overview of the power web 2.0 attained to convey a story through different means and media, with a historical context and some examples. Written by B.Alexander/A. Levine.

A short reference for a very interesting article published by The Guardian and written by Angus MacQueen, called "The revolution must be televised: Instead of being a threat, user-generated content is an exciting opportunity that can revitalise the art of documentary film-making ". This article touches two of my areas of investigation, both UGC and documentary, so I will probably look for more Angus' written work to see if this is a one-time article or if he constanly talks about these areas.

And last, but not least, we got a paper about User-Generated Content in Documentary Film: the Awesome, I f*cking shot that! case, which again talks about 2 of my investigation concepts, and is also related to a documentary containing UGC. I'll have to read more carefully this work of Jennifer Porst.

Look for some more new during the week, as I'll probably upload my index and presentation and link it here. Until then, good readings!

Who Am I?
